Howard B. Levene, MD, Ph.D., finished his Neurological Surgery Residency in 2008 at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. Subsequently, he completed a Neurosurgical Spine Fellowship in 2009 at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital under the tutelage of Drs. Barth Green, Allan Levi, Mike Wang, and Steven Vanni. After completing his fellowship training, Dr. Levene joined the esteemed faculty of the Department of Neurosurgery in August 2009.

Dr. Levene currently serves as Assistant Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery. His clinical practice is headquartered at Jackson Memorial Hospital - North.

Dr. Levene's clinical practice includes the treatment of numerous spinal disorders including but not limited to degenerative spine diseases, spinal trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, tumors, Chiari malformations, syrinxes, etc., and peripheral nerve diseases such as nerve entrapments, tumor and trauma. Dr. Levene performs cranial surgery for trauma, neoplasm, hydrocephalus, etc. The latest technology is available within the operating rooms including complex spinal instrumentation, artificial cervical discs, kyphoplasty/vertebroplasty, spinal cord monitoring and minimally invasive spine surgery.

Dr. Levene also maintains an active research practice. He currently is a Principal Investigator on an experimental model of spinal cord injury and its treatments at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Dr. Levene earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Rutgers University where he focused on Biomechanics/Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. His Thesis Advisor was Dr. Joachim Kohn, Director of the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials. During his Neurological Surgery residency, Dr. Levene worked as a post-doctoral fellow with Dr. Ronald F. Tuma and Dr. Jack I. Jallo studying Hypertonic Saline as a treatment for Spinal Cord Injury. For his work, Dr. Levene received the Synthes Award for Resident Research on Spinal Cord and Spinal Column Injury in 2006.

We are honored to have Dr. Levene remain a member of our family of caring physicians, and we very much look forward to the success he will bring both to the University and to his patients.
